- to promote human freedoms and the International Instruments that make provision for them;
- to promote creativity, artistic expression, and creative cultures of all types;
- to engage in meaningful discourse and vigorous debate with issues that relate to us all, with the intentions of bridging the gaps which divide us; stimulating conversations that provide us with solutions to current global problems; and celebrating both our diversity and common traits;
- to remove digital borders;
- to advance the awareness of the Millenium Development Goals; and
- to imbue the online world with hope, love, compassion, and community.
With the simple technology of the hyperlink, the world has gotten smaller. With it has come the potential to create networks that can be ever more proactive in advancing positive, real-world change.
The AIDS pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa is a litmus test for the unacknowledged heart of our times. The call to action won’t come tomorrow. It doesn’t come today. Now is gone. The call to action is a the hum of a fading clarion that was blown through some years ago. And it doesn’t begin and end on a single day each year. It requires an effort which must be sustained beyond the public occasion, and into the unknown and intangible future. It is time for us to pass the clarion to each other. Repeatedly.
We have the capabilities, through new technology, to completely stabilise – and in turn, eradicate – the major dilemmas of our times. The hyperlink is the lever of Arcimedes. It can move the world. It can create the communities of the compassionate and the focused that the times require. As businesses relinquish control of content and place it in the hands of the user; as the major social networks begin to open up and interact with each other; as more people get online for their news and information: the time for those who wish to make a difference has truly arrived.
We are poised at the most significant moment of social change in human history. That seems like a big and bold statement to make, but if one truly engages with the possibilities, there is no other destination that can be faithfully arrived at. To live in a brave new world, we must be brave. Get excited.
